SleuthFantastic! I can't remember the last time I enjoyed something so much at the theatre. We were completely taken in by the plot and the acting was first rate. I would highly recommend it. |

FalstaffA surprisingly enjoyable evening! not usually an opera fan (dragged by my better half) i found this one easy to follow, great singing and characterisation, a component some singers can lack. The set was imaginative and brilliantly created. My only faults would be the neck straining position of the subtitle machines (although it was nice to be so near and able to watch the orchestra superbly perform) The half hearted appearance of a few tree trunks and raggedy costumes in the last forest act did let it down slightly! but overall i would recommend this production. |

The Emperor's New KiltAfter reading the 'write up' of 'this season's must see','rauncy', 'hilarious', 'have you on the edge of your seat' production of the Emperor's new kilt, we bought tickets; wrongly assuming that it was for adults,(as did half the audience)!! I have heard of literary licence in the mailing, but the fact that about half the adult audience left at the interval says it all. Maybe a more honest approach to advertising would ensure our continued support of the theatre royal. Yes it was hysterical -because we couldn't believe that we had rushed our pre-theatre dinner and paid £14 to see this ! |

Jerry Sadowitz Comedian, Magician, PsychopathI'd left my political correctness and guilt at home. After all I knew what I was going to be letting myslef in for when I purchased a couple of tickets to see Jerry. I knew I'd be belly laughing out loud in response to observations by Mr. S about people that were probably a LOT worse off than myself whether in reference to their physical wellbeing, their situation, their physical make-up and demographic and/or anything else about them that you could generally file under 'misc'.Yes, this is NOT comedy for the easily offended or even the marginaly offended. This is what comedy should be - A comedian standing up in front of an audience and making comical observations on topical matters and figures in the public eye. Doesn't sound too dificult. unfortunately the constraints placed upon us in our modern civilisation make many of the subjects that Jerry discusses taboo i.e. you must take the party line of inoffence. SCREW THAT. This is the funniest comedian I have seen in years and, if it wasn't for Jerry's 'acute' show he could wipe the floor with ANY 'hip' comedian that currently peddle their nonsense on 'safe' tele (read, 'British Tele'). There were a few colective sharp intakes of breath at some of his observations but i didn't really notice as I was laughing so god damn hard. You see I can distinguish between what is a joke and what is cruelty. The only thing that's cruel about Jerry's act is his honesty! Great show. A very funny funny funny genius of a comedian. Having seen him do magic before I can tell you that this show did not even hint at his genius as a 'close-up' magician. But two folk in front of me on the way out were not too happy with the show. 'He was just soooo angry' said one. 'He really picks on people.' Well that's his act (secret.....he doesn't actually mean it. It's what he does for living) Thanks Jerry, it was a real honour seeing a genius at work. Brilliant. Anyone else who thought otherwise has lost ALL perspective. |

Barbara Dickson Live In ConcertA great night, 2 hours of good songs, some new, some old, beautifully played and sung in that easy going style with enough information in between to add to the songs and leave the full house audience wanting more. Superb backing group playing every instrument under the sun between them it seemed and the haunting aeolian pipes featuring several times. |

EquusAt the heart of the play is the plight of a young 17 year old boy - Alan Strang (and the surname is significant). Society has written him off to some extent for what seems like an act of violent insanity. He is strange and he is estranged. However as the play unfolds, it emerges that this act of violence is not as meaningless as it first appears and in fact symbolic of a tortured soul. Through the sessions with his psychiatrist, the audience learn much about Alan's formative influences that have led him to the psychiatrist's chair.Running in parallel to this main narrative is the story of the psychiatrist who has been chosen to get to the bottom of what is going on in Alan's mind. Martin Dysart (Dysart coming from Dia, God, and ard, high--the temple of the highest. Dysart was a place of ancient Druidical or Gaelic worship)becomes Alan's last hope. Alan has to transfer his faith to Dysart and effectively must learn to worship a different kind of God in order to be saved in the context of modern society. This is what creates a dilemma for Dysart who goes on his own voyage of self-discovery while treating Alan. The play is as much about the psychiatrist as it is about his patient. Dysart discovers with great disappointment that he is the embodiment of what is ordinary and safe about the world and finds himself yearning for the one thing that Alan has that his life is devoid of: passion. His interaction with Alan forces Dysart to re-examine his own life and raises questions of who exactly is the insane one, "Every night I watch that woman knitting,a woman I haven't kissed in six years. And he stands for an hour in the dark, sucking the sweat off his god's hairy cheek. In the morning,I put away my books on the cultural shelf...close up my Kodachrome snaps of Mount Olympus...touch my reproduction statue of Dionysus for luck...and go off to the hospital to treat him for insanity." Equus first opened in 1973 and the issues it deals with are still as relevant to an audience today. This is the mark of great theatre - to evolve with and stand the test of time. |
